タイの地方の都市や農村部、バンコクでも中心部をちょっと離れるとこの小型のトラックの荷台部分に向かい合わせの客席を作り、路線バスのようにブザー付けた改造小型トラック「ソンテウ」を見かける。
乗車方法はタクシー同様、ソンテウをつかまえ目的地を告げ、運転手と乗り手の行き先が合致していたらOK。荷台に乗り込み目的地が近づいたらブザーを押して止めてもらい料金を支払う。乗合タクシーみたい・・・。
市街地内なら１０～２０バーツと言う安さなので庶民の味方！（観光地は値段がUP）なのだが運転手さんはやはり乗せれるだけ乗せたいというのがホンネのようでけっこう乗せる乗せる。座れなければ立ってツールにつかまって風に吹かれながら乗る状態に。

ソンテウとはタイ語で「２列」と言う意味で荷台の客席が向かい合わせになっているのでソンテウと呼ぶとの事。
この日乗車した時は渋滞する通りを通るわけでもなく、乗客も我々以外一組の親子のみだったので荷台で風を感じながらの快適な乗車だった。
