千葉市美術館で7月21日まで開催されている「インドネシア更紗のすべて｣展へ行ってきました。
更紗＝Batik（バティック）は複雑な模様を、蝋で防蝋しながら繰り返し染めていく伝統工芸であり、 1枚に数ヶ月から丸1年かけて作る物まで存在します。
「タイ＝シルク」と言うイメージが強いですが、タイにも色鮮やかな更紗＝Batik（バティック）があります！
この「インドネシア更紗のすべて」展は、 アジア地域研究を専門とされている国士舘大学戸津正勝教授の30年にわたるコレクションの中から400点も展示されているとの事。 インドネシアとタイのバティックはどう違うのか？改めてきちんと確認してみたい！と思い行ってきました。
ガルーダ、孔雀、花、象他、模様はタイと共通する物が多々ありますが、タイは色彩の華やかなバティックが多いのですが、インドネシアのバティックは落ち着いた濃紺、赤、茶が主体のナチュラルで素朴な感じが多いと感じました。
タイにしろインドネシアにしろこの布1枚にほどこされる細かな作業の数々と工程には本当に感心してしまいます。
「老眼が始まったらこんなの絶対無理！」「私だったら途中で発狂する！」って言うような細かな丁寧な手仕事の布の数々をじっくり眺めてきました。
